Mission
The Center for Responsible AI Technologies aims to integrate philosophical, ethical, and social science questions from the outset into the development and application of AI technologies. Through this integrated research approach, the Center makes a significant contribution to socially responsible AI innovations in science and society.
Founded in February 2022, the Center is a collaboration between the University of Augsburg (UNIA), the Munich School of Philosophy (HFPH), and the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
Focus & Objectives
The Center for Responsible AI Technologies serves as a link and innovation accelerator in three areas:
We conduct research and develop methods for innovative concepts such as “Embedded Ethics” and technically-social “Co-Creation,” enabling the practical and context-based integration of AI applications across our four focus sectors:
→ Medicine / Care / Health
→ Future of Work
→ Mobility
→ Climate / Environment
This requires a holistic approach that combines interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary AI research with its philosophical-ethical and societal dimensions—always with the aim of rethinking the relationship between humans and machines.
Education of students and early-career researchers to become the decision-makers of tomorrow: By engaging with the ethical and societal dimensions of AI from an early stage, they become urgently needed experts who not only possess technical expertise but also have a solid foundation in philosophy, ethics, and social sciences. To this end, academic credits from partner institutions are mutually recognized, and joint interdisciplinary study programs are developed.
Our goal is to examine the ethical and societal dimensions of AI from various perspectives in collaboration with representatives of diverse societal groups and to strengthen societal acceptance through public dialogues, policy advice, and similar formats.
The focus is on innovatively leveraging the foundation of existing and dynamically evolving ethical and societal values to shape a sustainable and future-oriented relationship between humans and machines—as well as machine-mediated relationships between people, such as in care relationships.
